COLLAGE

Get out your tools and join me for COLLAGE: 1 of 12 classes in the Mixed Media Mechanics series.

The Lowdown

Mixed Media Mechanics is a series of 12 workshops that focus on many of the techniques that are the basis for mixed media art. Think of these classes as back to basics - although they are geared equally toward beginners and seasoned pros.

The Collage class was held Live in January 2024. This is an edited and recorded version

Collage is one of the most frequent techniques used by mixed media artists. We will explore the basic principles of and approaches to collage as we work through a series of creative exercises. The focus will be on helping you discover the collage approach that works best for you and your creative voice.

Part 1 includes a brief discussion about collage, review of the supply list, and a series of exercises aimed to help you discover your artistic voice within collage and explore different techniques. In Part 2, additional exercises are undertaken along with a review of 8 basic principles of collage: Overlapping, Contrasting, Guiding, Contouring, Repeating, Separating, Connecting, and Outlining. The workshop ends with the opportunity to create a guided collage using all you have learned.

The Supply List

If you would like to work along with me, please have the following on hand. If you do not have all the supplies or prefer to watch and work later, please simply sit back and take it all in. Please note that the workshop is about uncovering and enhancing your own individual artist voice. As such, I encourage you to choose/modify the list of supplies below to include the types of items you typically use.

Substrates. For the first part of the class, we will be going through a series of collage exercises and, as such, you can any substrate of any size. I will be using 140lb watercolor paper cut to various sizes, all under 8 x 8 inches. Have at least 6 sheets handy…but be prepared to possibly need more.

Collage material. Please choose the type of collage material that you typically use. Our focus will be on paper…but fabric you can bring in other materials if you like. Your material can be anything: hand painted papers, gel plate prints, commercial scrapbook paper, your drawings, ephemera, clip art, vintage book pages, words & phrases in any form, tissue, fabric, handmade paper, dyes paper, etc. All types of papers that you typically use for collage can work. Please note that if you are using images/illustrations from magazines, books, etc., they are likely not copyright free. While they can be used for the purpose of learning in this class, they should not be used for work that you might publish or sell.

Adhesive. I often use matte medium for collage but for the purpose of this workshop, I will primarily be using a glue stick so that we can have our collages dry faster. Plan on bringing both but make sure your glue stick is a quality brand – such as Avery, UHU, or Coccoina.

Scissor and ruler – both used for cutting collage material.

Journaling pen and/or pencil. I will be using a Signo Uniball pen and a Stabilo All pencil – both in multiple colors.
