When speaking about art, I often say that it is all in the details and that even a small addition can make a big impact. This is where mark making comes into play. You can use it to add detail, depth, shape, dimension, interest, and those all-important final touches to your artwork. But more importantly, you can use it to add your own hand and make your work completely your own. While mark making can be a fun process, filled with expression and abandon, it can also be intimidating for many people who are hesitant to simply go for it. This is where Make Your Mark comes in. In this workshop, you will learn the techniques and supplies involved in making marks, discover the marks that are meaningful to you, and begin to loosen up so that you can better tap into the fun and intuitive process of mark making.

The first part of the workshop will include a series of lessons about the process, creative benefits, and techniques of mark making. I will share my own approach to mark making and how I break the process down into a series of categories and steps. We will discuss the range of supplies available to you from the craft shop and already in and around your home and I will show you some of my favorite tools to use. A series of exercises will help you discover the marks that are personal and meaningful to you and loosen you up so you can be more comfortable and intuitive when adding marks to your artwork.

In the second part of the workshop we will make marks - mixed media style! We will begin with a mini-lesson in layering as we paint and collage to create the base for our mark making. Together we will then put into action all the info covered in the first part of the workshop as we make our marks. You can watch as I build the layers of marks on my sample and work along with me on yours. You will have the chance to make multiple pieces during the class and will leave with a toolbox of techniques that can be applied to your ongoing work in collage, painting, art journaling and mixed media.
