A very special item, this is an antique Promise Box. Research suggests it could have been made anywhere between the late 1800s to the 1930s. A Promise Box is a container filled with (in this case) small pieces of paper wrapped into scrolls on which are written verses from the Bible. The idea would be to draw a scroll at random to read for spiritual encouragement. This box is well worn and - although very hard to read due to fading - has the following inscribed on the removable cover: Exceeding great and precious promises. Thy words were found and I did eat them. Take one and replace. The box measures approximately 5 x 3 ⅞ inches. When opened, this looks like beautiful art and promises the owner spiritual solace.
