Join me for my newest, one-session, two-hour online class. This live, mixed media workshop is both technique- and project-based. We will be making a concertina book - also known as an accordion book – which will nest inside a metal tin. The book structure itself is an easy-make which will give us plenty of time to focus on surface design. I will be taking you though the steps of altering metal surfaces, allowing you to take a shiny new tin, perhaps with a design that you do not like, and turn it into a metalicious masterpiece. I will also guide you step-by-step through my process of building a dynamic surface design on paper – without any paint. You will leave the class with a one-of-a-kind project and a slew of surface design techniques that you can apply to your mixed media practice.
The Supply List:
With a few exceptions, this class was designed to focus primarily on basic supplies that most of you are likely to already have but if you are missing something, feel free to substitute. You will need to have the listed supplies ready at the start of the Live workshop if you want to follow along. Links are included when relevant throughout.
-One sheet of lightweight paper (either 12 x 12 or 8.5 x 11 inches preferred), keeping in mind that your paper has to fold and fit inside the tin. Options to use include traditional cardstock (about 65lb), lightweight watercolor paper (about 90lb), or scrapbook paper. Make sure you chose paper that is light in color (and pattern if using scrapbook paper). Feel free to have extra sheets so that you have a choice at class time and/or have the option to work on several papers in the class if you are a quick worker.
-A metal tin with lid (an attached, hinged top is preferred). We will be completely altering the surface of the tin as part of the class. My preference for size is somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 x 2.5 inches or smaller.
-Embossing powder in your favorite metal colors plus green patina color. I will be using my Metalz and Cosmic sets from WOW which are available to purchase in my online shop if you are in the United States and at the WOW online shop and many independent retailers if you are outside the US. You can of course use other metallic powders as well.
-Heat tool
-Adhesive. I will be using both PVA and a glue stick.
-Dye ink pads in assorted colors (such as Ranger Distress)
-Black gesso
-Paint brushes (Please note that my metal altering technique uses inexpensive chip brushes in ½ or 1inch sizes)
-Water container
-Smooth craft or cosmetic sponges
-Unmounted background/mark making stamps
-Mark Makers (I will be using Signo Uniball and Vision Uniball gel pens and Stabilo All pencils in assorted colors – but anything you have will work)
-A small amount of collage material. Consider having both paper and fabric bits on hand. Washi tape works well for this too. And remember that we are working small.
-Scratch paper to use to catch embossing powders and to glue over.
